Transparency

In Spring 2015, OAHHS launched its price transparency initiative. The initiative contained three key elements, all of which focused on giving consumers pricing details in advance of a hospital visit for a procedure.  These elements include:
  • Legislation calling for a new state-run website displaying median prices paid by consumers for hospital procedures. This website will help patients understand and compare the typical cost of common medical procedures across hospitals.
  • Working together with insurers through the Oregon Health Leadership Council (OHLC) to help insured patients better to understand what their out-of-pocket expenses will be.
  • A pledge from Oregon’s hospitals to help Oregonians paying for their own care in getting a good-faith estimate prior to a scheduled procedure upon request.

Oregon Hospital Guide

In May 2015, OAHHS launched Oregon Hospital Guide. a website comparing hospital pricing data on a user-friendly platform. The site is specifically designed to make hospital  pricing information understandable, comparable and accessible to all Oregonians. To learn more, visit OregonHospitalGuide.org.

Patient Experience

The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey is a national, publicly reported survey of patients’ perspectives of hospital care. HCAHPS (pronounced “H-caps”), measures patients’ perceptions of their hospital experience.

Patient satisfaction at Oregon hospitals can be found by clicking here and choosing the “Patient Experience” measure. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services features Hospital Compare, a website where you can search for hospitals by location and compare them on measures such as:
  • Patient experience
  • Communication with nurses and physicians
  • Timely help
  • Pain management
  • Cleanliness
