In Spring 2015, OAHHS launched its price transparency initiative. The initiative contained three key elements, all of which focused on giving consumers pricing details in advance of a hospital visit for a procedure. These elements include:
- Legislation calling for a new state-run website displaying median prices paid by consumers for hospital procedures. This website will help patients understand and compare the typical cost of common medical procedures across hospitals.
- Working together with insurers through the Oregon Health Leadership Council (OHLC) to help insured patients better to understand what their out-of-pocket expenses will be.
- A pledge from Oregon’s hospitals to help Oregonians paying for their own care in getting a good-faith estimate prior to a scheduled procedure upon request.
